Of the 29 Proto-Semitic consonants, only one was lost that merged with /s/. A number of other consonants have also changed quality, but have retained their distinctiveness. Of the 29 Proto-Semitic consonants, only one has been lost which merged with /s/. Various other consonants have changed their sound too, but have remained distinct.
