Notes
Scanning from a substitute document. The work is divided into five parts: an introduction, three اركان (columns) and a خاتمة. The first ركن contains everything concerning Muhammad, from the creation of his prophetic light until his birth; the second gives the biography of the Prophet, from his birth to the hegira, and the third, from the hegira to his death. These اركان are subdivided into chapters (باب), sections (فصل) and stations (موطن). The خاتمة contains lists of slaves, freedmen, qadis of Mohammed, etc., as well as the history of the first four caliphs and a summary of Muslim history until the conquest of Egypt by the Ottomans. The preface begins with these words: الحمد لله الـذى خـلـق نـور نبيّه قـبـل كـل اوائـل. Hadji Khalfa mentions the opinion of certain people according to which the true title of this book would be الحميس which is one of the names of Mecca. In a few mss. and in the Cairo edition we read انفس نفيس “the most precious being”, instead of the title words النفس النفيس. Ms. dated 1066 A.H. (1656 A.D.). Scanning from a substitute document.
