The author says in the preface that he composed this volume for the use of Zaïn al-Dîn Abou ʾl-Djoûd Baqr (بقر) ibn Râschid al-Zaïnî, great emir of the nomadic Arabs of the eastern and western countries. The work begins with an introduction, divided into five chapters, which covers the knowledge necessary for anyone who wants to deal with genealogies. The fourth chapter lists the localities that the Arabs occupied in ancient times. Next comes a section entitled مقصد “purpose”, the first chapter of which contains the genealogy of the Prophet. The second part of the work is an alphabetical dictionary, containing the names of the various branches of each tribe. The conclusion, divided into five chapters, deals with the religious beliefs of the Arabs before Islamism, the discussions which took place between the tribes, about their nobility, their days and fights, certain fires they lit and their fairs and other meetings. This ms., autograph, is dated from the year 846 A.H. (1442-1443 A.D.). At the end of the volume is the signature of Schams al-Dîn Moḥammad ibn Qâsim al-Zaïnî, grandson of the emir for whom Al-Qalqaschandî composed this work.
