Arǧah and Šīrūyah were the two sons of a king of Rum who lived in ancient times, and whose name was Malikšāh. Arǧah, who was the eldest, was designated by his father to succeed him, and to exercise sovereignty during the rest of his life. On his death, Arǧah ascended the throne and the great people of his court advised him to give some prerogative to Šīrūyah, to prevent him from revolting against him and taking away his power. Arǧah preferred to have Šīrūyah taken from the city of Roum, during one night, and he had him thrown into a ditch, where he expected his brother would die of hunger and thirst. But these criminal plans were foiled by the will of Allah and Šīrūyah miraculously regained his freedom.
