Each period begins with a table, divided into seven compartments, the first of which contains the name of the reigning caliph; the second the names of the cadis who died during this period; the third the names of the lawyers; the fourth those of the readers; the fifth those of the traditionists; the sixth those of the Sufis, and the seventh those of the men of letters. These obituaries are followed by a listing of political or other events during the ten-year period. It appears, according to the catalog of the Royal Library of Munich, page 142, that at least part of Al-Dsahabî's Annals of Islamism was written in periods of ten years. The work of which the present volume is only a fragment, was composed after the 7th century AH; because the Biographical Dictionary of Ibn Khallikân is cited there (fol. 45 v°).
