| Notes | Soot ink was used in Ottoman calligraphy. Soot ink consists of the combination of soot obtained from linseed oil, beeswax, turpentine, kerosene and similar substances, gum arabic and water, and is black in color. Soot ink is prepared in different arrangements depending on both the work it is used in and the writing style used in writing the work. Calligraphers preferred to use inks they prepared themselves when writing. Stamp-shaped ink particles are also used as soot ink after being wetted with water. Different colored ink types are known by their special names. Red writings are written with garnet ink, gold-gilded lines are written with gold ink, and especially the sura titles written on a gold background in the Qur'ans are written with white opal ink. |
