Notes A letter from Asyut (Egypt) written in the Ottoman period. HS begins in rhymed prose with a greeting and a blessing for the Orthodox community in Asyut and its surroundings, across all ecclesiastical and social classes. The Author informs the congregation that Mitawus will lead the congregation as the new bishop will. Everyone who reads or hears this letter must obey the bishop and behave like "obedient sons". The congregation should hold services on Visit on Sunday. The author urges them to participate in the Eucharist, "in [his, Christ's] memory" and not to ignore fasting on Wednesday and Friday. This is called law and duty [interestingly, using Terms that are common in Islamic usage: šarīʿa and farīḍa]. The Schreiber has a particular interest in "forbidden marriages... with Arabs or others", and explicitly states that should anyone close these, "Babylonian punishments" come upon them. Disobedience in all forms will be sickness and death, death and Bring famine, war and defeat, poor harvests and disease of livestock. So: "Obey your elders." The author also considers it necessary to speak out against heresies like to pronounce Macedonianism and Nestorianism. He mentions the decision here of those 318 fathers who met in Nicaea regarding the nature of God at that time and his son [then quotes from the Gospel of John, 1:3]. He challenges the community to repent and to honor the Virgin Mary and Saint Mark the Evangelist, to call. Only then “will you be blessed by the one and only Church - and of the 318 fathers of Nicaea and the 150 fathers of Constantinople." - Translation from information provided by Prof. Nabil Matar, University of Minnesota
