Also contains: making of. - Reserved for sale Silent film; making of in original Farsi version, with French and English subtitles on a sandy beach lies an old piece of dry wood, washed by the waves. Little by little, it becomes detached, drifts away and breaks in two: one part remains on the beach, the other is lost in the waves then reappears briefly before finally being carried away by the sea to disappear. The stories that Abbas Kiarostami tells in the five sequences of Five are all unspectacular miniatures. But it is precisely on this very small scale that they meticulously deal with a theme which becomes, in the film, a universal subject. They evoke the way in which a thing is set in motion, arises, passes and disappears. In Five, this is what happens to a piece of wood in the sand, but also to people who pass in front of the camera on the beach path, or to ducks who waddle in the camera's field quacking, as if they wanted to parody all of humanity. The scene of Kiarostami's miniature stories is the sea. Initially, we clearly recognize it in the image. But subsequently, under the sound of the waves, a slow fade to white gradually transforms it into an abstract surface. In the last sequence, shot at night, we can only guess at it. Little by little, the sound of the waves is no longer perceptible. In its place, we hear the cry of an animal which races rhythmically before fading away. It is certainly on the rhythm of waves and sounds that Five, Kiarostami's lyrical film, is based. Thanks to him, his stories of appearance, existence, disappearance and erasure of things become entangled in intense and sensual experiences.
