Single niche carpet. Mudjar, 19th century. Woven from the point of the niche; it has been cut down the middle and rejoined but about 4" of the width is missing. WARP: white wool; Z2S; 13 threads per inch (52 per dm). WEFT: red wool; Z spun, unplied; 2 occasionally 3 shoots after each row of knots; number of knots varies, average 8 knots per inch (32 per dm). PILE: wool; 9 colours: red, light red, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, black, white; symmetrical knot tied around 2 threads; 52 knots per sq. inch (832 per sq. dm). SIDE FINISH: missing END FINISH: missing DESIGN: divided into 3 sections: the upper and the middle part is a red panel with a simple stepped niche bordered by a blue line supporting intruding blue flowers and by a white, a yellow and then a red line. The middle part has a green field with two red floral sprigs and two rosettes; a series of three zigzag lines outline small purple and yellow triangles which border three sides of the green field. The lowest panel has a red ground with three downward pointing broad arrows outlined in white and each containing a sprig; between them are three narrow upward pointing angular sprigs (arrowhead). Main border: yellow ground with large rosettes framed by four pairs of curled V-motifs set on diagonals forming a yellow diamond background to the rosette. The colour combinations appaear in the same order on both sides. Inner border: blue ground with a line of touching diamonds outlined in yellow. Each one filled with five flowerheads. Between each diamond is a pair of red floral sprigs. Outer border: missing but evidence of black ground with motifs in all colours.
