Fragment of tapestry band, woven in silk on a linen warp. Egyptian, Fatimid, ca. AD1000-1200. Tiraz. The linen is undyed and the silk is cream and red. Repeating diamond shaped icons cover the fabric each enclosing a character like form. The lines of diamonds alternated between a red or cream background. In between the diamonds are criss-crossed rows of outlined geometric forms within rectangles. Two thin borders can be seen at the top and bottom of the piece and the design continues on the other side of the border. One edge of the piece is selvedge. The fabric is stained and has holes.
