Notes A head cap made of woven silk and linen with a padding of linen fibre. Egyptian, ca. AD1250-1500. From a tomb. The cap is comprised of a skull cap attached to a head band. The fabric for both is an olive green, plain woven silk, quilted with a green, silk thread. The skull cap is made of six triangular piece of fabric sewn together. Each triangle has a border made of angled lines. The inside of the triangle has geometric patterns. At the tip of each triangle, where they meet at the centre, are nine small holes in the shape of a diamond, stitched with button hole stitch. The head band (60mm in width) is decorated with quilted rows of zig-zagged diamonds that run around the cap. Above and below are rows of running stitch. There are two linen linings, with padding in between. The linen is undyed; plain woven; approx. 16x16 tpc. The padding is made from a fibrous paper and rolled wads of linen? fibre. The cap is damaged with holes and staining.
