Notes
This fine, thin-walled beaker was inspired by âqingbaiâ (âblueish-whiteâ) porcelain from China. The motifs, however, are Iranian. The band of scrollwork near the top of the beaker has been pierced and then filled with glaze. It is made of fritware, also called stone paste and quartz paste. This material was developed by Middle Eastern potters as a response to the challenge posed by Chinese porcelain. In the 12th and early 13th centuries, potters in Kashan and other centres in Iran used fritware to produce fine wares decorated in an astonishing range of styles.
