Middle East, Carpet, Fragment. Carpet fragment, wool knotted pile on wool warp and cotton weft, Iran, 1800-1880

Warp: white wool; Z2S; 16 threads per inch (60 per dm). Weft: white cotton; Z3S; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 10 knots per inch (38 per dm). Pile: wool; 9 colours: dark red, red, yellow, dark green, green, dark blue, blue, black, white; symmetrical knot tied around 2 threads; 80 knots per sq. inch (1140 per sq. dm). Side finish: cut. End finish: lower - cut; upper - missing. Design: red ground; compartment separated by red line outlined in green. Compartments are either cross-shaped or sixteen-pointed star. The cross contains central composite blossom with a pair of white flowerheads above and below. On either side there is a green flowerhead and a yellow and blue blossom. The star contains yellow and blue stylised blossoms and green leaves.
