A pair of dark leather shoes, Egyptian, ca. AD300-700 (probably). Decorated with a leather, incised, applied medallion. Made with the turned technique with rand. Acquired from D.B.Myers. Coptic footwear was primarily made with leather, often using the turned technique, to produce a slipper or shoe with a straight sole. Slippers often included a rand at the vamp and a fibre padded sole sewn together with prominent stitching or insole tab. They show variation in the form and height of the instep. Shoes were generally slip-ons and also show variation in the form and height of the instep. Footwear was highly decorated in geometric and floral designs. Often a variety of techniques were used in combination, with the most popular being dyeing, gilding, openwork and appliqué.

A pair of flat, brown leather shoes. Egyptian, ca. AD300-700 (probably). Semi-pointed toe and round heel. Turned technique with rand. Sole: Straight. Seat appears moulded into heel shape. Rand 3mm wide. No insole. Upper: One piece joined at backseam with separate strip of leather between quarters. Topband 6mm wide with running stitch. Semi-circular piece of leather backseam internally. High throat with point at instep. Decoration of a leather medallion (57mm diameter) same colour as shoe, sewn with cross stitch. Pattern contains an incised pattern of a centre short-cross which is covered in cross hatching and sits within a circle. Cross arms end in semi-circles and points between ends of the arms are joined by two semi-circles. Each quarter between the arms has a line of small arrows, on a line, leading from where the semi-circles meet to the inside corner of the cross. Backseam has a strip of leather sewn vertically on either side, with running stitch, of 12mm wide.
