Notes
A roundel from a linen cloth, tapestry-woven in purple wool and undyed linen. Egypt, possibly Akhmim, ca. AD200-500. The roundel has projecting knops on either side. At the end of each knop is a line with fleur-de-lys type motif on the end. The roundel has a male head at the centre. He is surrounded by four vases and four baskets (?). Between these are vines, with leaves, that come from the top of the vases. This is encircled by a border of guilloche interlace, approx 25mm wide. Another small ring of guilloche then surrounds this. The knops are also decorated with interlace. The linen cloth, of which not much remains, is plain woven and s-spun. There is a hole in one side of the roundel.
