Knotted woollen carpet, with cotton Cotton Wool Weaving

Woollen knotted carpet with central medallion in blues and tans with yellow on a ground of white with confronted cones in red, beneath blue and white tendrils. Corner pieces repeat quarters of the central medallion. Warp: white cotton; Z4S; 26-30 threads per inch (104-120 per dm); depressed. Weft: white cotton; Z4S; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 20 knots per inch (80 per dm). Pile: wool; 10 colours: red, dark orange, orange, Yellow, green, light green, dark blue, dark brown, light brown, white; asymmetrical knot, open to the left and tied around 2 threads; 260-300 knots per sq. inch (4160-4800 per sq. dm). Side finish: one cord oversewn with purple silk. End finish: Lower: missing. Upper: incomplete but evidence of a fringe with a row of single knots. Design: Field: a white ground with a central orange medallion outlined in dark blue and containing a dark blue star-like medallion with a pair of confronting botehs around its edge and a red star above and below a blue rosette. There are part medallions in the corners - brown and dark blue in lower part and orange and dark blue in upper. There is an orange trefoil like pendant above and below the central medallion. The ground is divided by 2 lattices (1) blue with red spots (2) white with red spots. Beneath these and the medallions are 10 bands each made of a pair of confronting red botehs alternating with a dark blue cypress tree which contains flowerheads. Main border: dark blue ground with a double stylised meander in orange and red. The main motifs area are triangular palmette with an outward facing red boteh to each side. There is a pair of red botehs (one slightly on top of the other) on the stem. The border narrows along top and bottom. Inner border from inside: (1) yellow ground with green and red motifs. (2) reciprocal light orange and dark blue Y-motifs. (3) orange ground with a floral meander with a white daisy-like flower and yellow and blue flowers on a light green stem. (4) light orange ground with an angular floral meander with a white stem with white and red flowers alternating with a blue boteh.
