Turkish prayer carpet; slit tapestry WARP: white wool; Z2S; 9-13 threads per inch (37-44 per dm). WEFT: wool; Z-spun, unplied; 7 colours: red, green, dark blue, purple (faded), pink, brown, white, 37-50 threads per inch (152-180 per dm). SIDE FINSIH: Returned weft END FINISH: lower: fringe max. 16 cms. long partially knotted with evidence of a line of pink weft twining above the knots. Upper: missing. DESIGN: field: white ground, undecorated red rectangle (one small white motif towards the bottom) ending in a 2-sided niche extending into a pair of pink horns separating the green spandrels; the red area and the white ground are edged vertically in a toothed pattern. The white ground and the (a) purple and (b) pink toothed-edged borders all bear a line of hourglass motifs in various colours. Lower and upper outermost border: white ground with a bold interlocking pattern of S-motifs in all colours. Below this is a band of plainweave with brown wool and there is evidence of a similar band above.
