Carpet (ok-bash: described as in use) WARP: white and grey wool; Z2S; 19 threads to the inch (74 per dm). WEFT: dark brown wool; Z spun unplied; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 18 knots to the inch (79 per dm). PILE: wool; 8 colours: dark red, red, yellow, dark green, dark blue, purple, black, white; symmetrical knots (NB: some knots have been pulled in different directions and this results in 'partings' in the pile) tied around 2 warp threads; 171 knots per sq. inch (2923 per sq. dm). SIDE FINISH: the left-hand side has one cord oversewn in alternate blocks of red and blue. The right-hand side is missing but evidence at top right of plain weve with dark brown weft turned and stitched. END FINISH: the lower end is incomplete with evidence of stout cord oversewn in blue and red in lower left. The upper end is missing but there is evidence of 1 cm plain weave with red weft and then evidence in the upper left and centre that it was turned and oversewn with red and blue in a chevron pattern - but perhaps a cord was added. It is not possible to ascertain whether both upper and lower left were the same but they would have formed the strengthened opening for the bag. DESIGN: field: parallel zigzag bands form deep, saw-edged triangles divided vertically into three wide and two narrow rows by four narrow purple and yellow poles. Borders: the main border has a reciprocal dark green/red horned motif, each pair of horns bearing a white floret. The inner and outer borders have giagonal blocks of colour alternating with dark red blocks. Flaps: each has a stepped triangle, two predominantly white and two red, complimenting the design on the field. Catalogue date: 15.2.95

Purchased with 7 other pieces for £3 from The Anglo-Persian Carpet Co., S. Kensington. Described in 1924 as one of "7 interesting little pieces of Turcoman carpet-knotting, good in design, colour & technique". This is one of two which "appear to be holster-like saddle-bags, perhaps used for carrying a bow and arrows or similar objects....The price for the seven pieces... is nominal".
