Notes A band of tapestry woven silk on an undyed linen warp. Possibly the end of a scarf or girdle. Egyptian ca. AD900-1100. The linen is fine with differing thread dia. between approx. 0.3mm - 0.6mm; s-spun; approx. 14 x 16 tpc. The silk colours are yellow, brown, blue and green on a cream/buff background. The pattern shows a band of design bordered on either side with a line approx. 10mm side of guilloche pattern. A cream silk is plain woven on the outer edge to stand out from the linen. Within these borders is a band of design. The design has two circles with stylised birds (?) inside. The birds are globular in shape. Between the circles are other globular shapes that show bilateral symmetry. One side is selvedge and the other has been turned over and roughly stitched with a cream silk thread in running stitch. The top and bottom edges are stained and the piece has some holes.
