Notes Half a silk head cap with linen lining. Egypt, ca. AD1000-1400, from a tomb. The skull cap area is made of finely woven blue and buff silk in a checked pattern. The cheques are in themselves striped. The head band area is made of a silk, pattern weave of colourful stripes (pink, green, light blue, dark blue, red). The linen lining is undyed; plain weave; approx 16x16 tpc; differs dia. threads. The layers are quilted together in a running stitch using poorly dyed, blue linen thread; s-spun. The cap is stained and with holes. The skull cap is made of two halves sewn at the centre. The lining does not meet at the centre line. A single line of thread (running stitch) is sewn on either side of the centre and the quilted lines run in semi-circles around the centre. The skull cap is attached to a head band, approx. 55mm wide. It is possible that the checked fabric runs through the band. It is edged in a whip stitch. Three lines of running stitch go around the band and then the centre is stitched to create a guilloche pattern.
