Notes
A small woollen roundel cut from a linen cloth. Possibly Egyptian, ca. AD200-400. Tapestry woven (some slit-tapestry) and some embroidery. The background cloth is undyed linen with the woollen roundel of dark and light cream and black. The central image is of a woman, Europa, riding a bull. There is a duck above her on the right and a fish below her on the left. Scrolling waves are embroidered around the outside of the roundel. In Greek mythology Europa was a Phoenician woman of high lineage. The story of her abduction by Zeus in the form of a white bull was a Cretan story.
