19th century Turkish carpet, slit tapesty WARP: mainly white but also shades of brown wool; Z2S; 6 threads per inch (22 per dm). WEFT: wool; S-spun, unplied; sometimes single threads used and sometimes 2 parallel ones; 5 colours: yellow, light yellow, blue, brown, white; average of 22 threads per inch (88 per dm) SIDE FINISH: returned weft END FINISH: incomplete DESIGN: field: yellow ground with 7 or 6 and 2 half anthropomorphic figures in blue; these are repeated in 14 bands of off-set blue along the length. The first row of figures are solid, without the yellow centre. Main border: white ground with off-set bands of possibly anthropomorphic figures in blue and yellow. Inner border: blue zigzag line separating yellow and light yellow. Outer border: blue zigzag line separating yellow and white. Both ends have narrow bands of blue, white and yellow. The lower end begins with a band of brown. NB: Woven like others of this type with interrupted vertical slits; these do not run the entire length of the carpet and have been stitched togeher. They are visible on the photograph.
