Notes A pair of child's dark leather, flat shoes. Egyptian, ca. 30 BC - AD 300 (possibly). Semi-pointed toe and round heel. One piece joined along centre of treadsole and up through heel. Sole: Straight. Insole probably of two linen layers. Treadsole is leather. Treadsole is leather and elaborately decorated in gold paint (?) with scrolling 's' shapes, alternating in direction, and dots, within borders following the perimeter of the shoe. Centre area also filled with a row of the same design. Line full length of sole indicating where sole was stitched together. Upper: Gold floral and line decoration. Decoration continues over vamp and around quarters and heel. Two double lines are at the top and bottom with a line of scrolling 's' shapes, alternating in direction, and dots in between. Quarters' top is turned over and sew with whip stitch.
