Notes A roundel from a linen tunic. Egyptian, possibly Akhmim, ca. AD700-900. It is tapestry-woven in coloured wools (red, green, brown, dark blue, light blue, orange and yellow) on a linen warp (z-spun) and remains stitched (whip stitch) to a backing of undyed linen cloth. At the centre are four birds. The top two are peacocks and are back to back with heads turned in to each other. A vase and garland is between them. The bottom two are quails and are back to back facing away from each other. They sit in a circle of red background with some floral decoration filling the spaces. This is surrounded by a circle of interlocking geometric shapes (L shaped) in different colours. There is then a border of rough heart shaped red leaves with orange V shapes and other small floral icons. This is surrounded by another border of interlocking L/geometric shapes. The linen cloth is a tabby/plain weave, approx 16 x 16 tpc, with consistent thread dia. Both fabrics are stained.
