Notes
A fragment of woven wool. Egypt, probably ca. AD400-700. Compound and plain weave. Colours are dark blue, buff and brown. Double warp of buff treads, s-spun. On one side is a stripe of dark blue (plain weave) approx. 45mm wide. The rest of the fabric is in buff and brown compound weave. The design is of a repeating, decorative square. In the centre of the square is a bird. It is surrounded by a wavy line and dots, bordered with solid lines either side. Each square has its corners cut off and at the points at which they meet is a eight petalled flower motive. The piece has holes and is stained.
