Description: Plain weave cotton, seamed before being embroidered with silk in straight stitches, interlined, backed with glazed roller-printed cotton and faced with bias cut silk satin, padded.. Off-white cotton ground over a fine layer of woollen fibres, embroidered with ecru, peach, pink, blue, greens, yellow and white silk. The outer border with elegant flower stems surrounded by four pink flower heads within meandering borders, the foot place embroidered with a profusion of colourful flowers, the field beneath the prayer arch with small floral sprays in alternating rows. The apex of the arch forming into a palmette containing a floral arrangement. The spandrels of the arch with fine pointed serrated flowers. Brown ink under drawing is visible in areas where the thread has worn away. Backing: pieced, glazed cotton printed with tightly packed rows of small flower-filled botehs in browns and white. Facing: bias cut blue satin. The mat is joined to the backing by discreet lines of running stitch.
