saddle bag face WARP: white wool; Z2S; 14 threads per inch (54 per dm). WEFT: dark brown wool; Z spun, unplied; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 11 rows of knots per inch (46 per dm). PILE: wool; 8 colours: red, light red, dark green, dark blue, dark purple, dark brown, brown, white; asymmetrical knot open to the left, tied around two warp threads; 77 knots per sq. inch (1242 per sq. dm). SIDE IFNIHS; 2 cords overcast with dark brown wool. END FINISH: Lower: cut. Upper: a narrow band of plain weave with brown weft, then cut. DESIGN: dark blue ground. In the centre is a white octagon outlined in blue containing an eight-pointed white star with central red diamond. Stippled white and dark purple lines radiate in a cross almost reaching a similar line forming large, near square, octagon with red ground and providing a spine on the horizontal for two pairs of hooks and on the vertical for three sets of angular projections, all in dark purple. Blue stylised blossoms project into quadrants from narrow brown stems. Surrounding rectangular octagons are dark green palmettes, outlined in red, alternate with brown ones outlined in light red. Each one contains on a red centre a Y device in blue (apart from one in white on the right hand side). The field is outlined by a reciprocal red trefoil pattern. Main border: bold floral meander of four flowerheads linked on brown stems. Inner border: diagonal blocks of light red and brown. Outer border: diagonal blocks of red and blue. Catalogue date: 9.8.94
