Notes Slit-tapestry woven wool, with some embroidery. Egyptian, ca. AD400-600. Probably from a tunic clavi. The background is in red and there are bands of design running down the piece. One band is bordered, on both sides, with entwined red ropes on a white/cream background. Between these borders are icons (green, white/cream, red) of a rabbit inside a circle with floral attachments; a bird with open wings ; and a naked human figure with a raised hand. To one side of this band is a green stripe (23mm) that ends at the edge of this fragment. On the other side of this band another band starts at 80mm away. It too has a border of entwined red ropes on white/cream and evidence of a human motif and a bird; but this piece is ripped along the side. Holes are also present in the centre of the fragment. Approx. 43x9 tpc; s-spun wool. Some of the green threads are embroidered to create aspects of the designs.
