A piece of woven linen cloth with a band of colourful silk decoration (pink, blue, green, black, red and yellow). Probably from the end of a scarf or girdle. Tiraz. Egyptian, Manshiya, Fatimid, ca. AD1000-1200. The linen is undyed; 19 x 23 tpc (sys 1 x sys 2); s-spun; thread dia. between 0.3mm - 0.5mm. The band (68mm wide) contains a central line of oval shaped motifs. Each side is bordered with a line of what looks like Islamic script in different colours. The linen is stained and there are some holes in the band. In the Abbasid period (AD750-1258) fabrics, called tiraz, were made in present day Iraq and Egypt. Text from the Koran was embroidered across the fabric with a line of geometric shapes above that were probably for decoration. The word came to mean honorific robes with woven or embroidered inscriptions. Text might also include information such as the name of the reigning caliph, place of production and date.
