Kapunuk or tent door surround, wool knotted pile on wool foundation, Tekke Turkoman, Turkmenistan, 1850-1900

Border for the top of a tent-entrance, of pile carpet, knotted in dyed and undyed wools on woollen warps. WARP: white wool, some plied with brown; Z2S; 23 threads to the inch (85 to the dm). WEFT: light brown wool; Z spun, unplied with 2 parallel threads to each shoot and 1 shoot after each row of knots; 20 knots to the inch (79 to the dm). PILE: wool; 6 colours: dark red, light red, dark green, dark blue, dark brown, white; asymmetrical knot open to the right and tied around 2 threads; 230 knots to the sq. inch (3358 per sq. dm). SIDE FINISH: all sides have 2 rows of symmetrical knots of 3-ply (elsewhere 2-ply) and then one cord oversewn with blue wool. On the upper sides are attached red and blue braids for 23 cms. which then extend on the left for 114.5 cm. and on the right for 112 cms. END FINISH: the lower end has 4 cms. of plain weave with cream weft and then red, turned and stitched. The upper has 4 cms. of plain weave, the upper half with red weft and the lower half with cream. It is turned at the colour change and stitched into place. The pendant ends have 1 cm. of plain weave with red weft. The weft threads are bound in blocks of various colours into bundles of 6 to form a fringe of 55 cms. max. DESIGN: field: the top and the two pendants have a white ground. The top has two bands of eight serrated leaves, each with an angular central curl in a contrasting colour. Upper and lower leaves are paired by a linking stem which frames similar small leaves also containing curls. On the pendants this design becomes a foliate meander with smaller secondary motifs. Small pronged comb motifs are scattered throughout the field. Within the field, at the bottom of the top panel and both pendants is a band of barred motifs outlined in dark red or dark brown. Border: the border has a dark red ground with white diamonds alternating with paired intruding triangles. An extra upper band has a reciprocal horned motif in red and dark blue with white florets.
