Notes A woven silk cap with linen lining. Egyptian, ca. AD1000-1400. From a tomb. The cap is made of a large skull cap and a small width head band. The skull cap is formed with a central linen band running across the centre with either side filled with semi-circles of silk and linen. The outer layer is red silk; compound weave. The inner layer is undyed linen; plain weave; approx. 13x13 tpc; s-spun. Each semi-circle is attached at the cente to a band (15mm wide) running across the centre. It is formed of a double layer of pattern woven linen with a blue linen thread running through the centre. Blue linen threads also sew the band to the fabric, with a whip stitch. The head band running around the cap is approx. 25mm wide. It is undyed linen, finely woven with a checked pattern of blue threads. It is sewn on with a whip stitch in blue, linen thread. The hat is stained, with some holes and some of the head band is missing.
