Notes
A roundel from a linen cloth. Egyptian, possibly Akhmim, ca. AD300-600. The decoration is in purple and undyed wool. A thin strip of a linen (s-spun) cloth are still attached around most of the edge. About half way into the roundel is a thick bordered circle. Within this, four leafy stems are attached to the circle and juts into the centre. Each stem has three leaves attached to it (each leaf has eight fonds). Outside this circle is a ring of circular geometric shapes. Each has a purple square in the centre, with a small arm at each side - to make a form of a cross. This is then bordered, in the cross form, in white and then bordered again in a purple circle. The spaces between each circle are filled with solid triangles. This is then bordered with reverse scalloping. The piece has some holes and one half is stained.
