Notes
Zakaria Al-Qazwini's very famous book (The Wonders of Creatures) was compiled in 1270 AD. The text describes many real and imaginary wonders of the universe and explores topics of geography, astronomy, horoscopes, and natural history. Its text is written in Arabic and was later translated into both Persian and Turkish. Most copies contain extensive illustrations. This special edition includes more than 500 illustrations, including pictures of peacocks, monkeys and other creatures on the island of Java. The chadar is a mythical animal with a head shaped like a musical trumpet and an anatomical figure of a pregnant woman. The introduction to the manuscript is a double-page gilt frontispiece.
