Notes
This part of the Qur’an belongs to one of the oldest Qur’ans in the world: it is likely a very old Iraqi copy, copied in a horizontal rectangular format from the first quarter of the eighth century, and which is laid out in an ancient type of script that can be compared to the Hijazi script that was known in both Mecca and Medina. The rules of Tajweed appear in the form of red dots throughout the text, while the circular medallions in the margin contain the number of verses written in green and framed in green and red. This is important textual evidence of more than 60 previous pieces dating back to before 800 AD, and one of the previous owners can be identified as Kayqubad I of the Sultanate of Rum (1219-1237), and he is likely only one of a few high-level manuscript collectors who was in possession of an ancient copy of the Qur’an.
