Notes
The piece is a manuscript written in Naskh script, and consists of four hundred and twelve pages, each containing fifteen lines. The manuscript's leaves are almost yellow due to the age of the era, and some of them bear traces of moisture. The author of the manuscript (Ibn Shaddad) joined the service of Saladin al-Ayyubi (r. 564-589 / 1169-1193), who appointed him as a judge for his army in Jerusalem, and he remained with Saladin until his death. Ibn Shaddad then went to Aleppo and built a school there and made a hadith center next to it. He settled in Aleppo until he died. Ibn Shaddad divided his manuscript into three sections: the first, about the birth of Saladin, his origin, characteristics, descriptions, morals, and virtues; The second, in the fluctuations of his circumstances, his wars and conquests until the end of his life; The third is in the names of the cities and castles that Saladin conquered between the years 583-586 / 1187-1190. The author mentioned that he began his contact with Saladin in 584 / 1189 and stayed with him until his death in 589 / 1193. Ibn Shaddad states in his manuscript that he relied on those he trusted to chronicle the events that he did not witness, while the events that he witnessed he described as he witnessed them himself. The biography of Saladin in this manuscript is considered one of the most reliable references that talked about Saladin, and therefore historians relied on it when writing about the life of Saladin, especially the last period of his life (584 - 589 / 1189 - 1193). This biography provides a detailed description of historical events, war battles, and the fighting tools used by the Islamic and Crusader armies. The author also describes many of the social and administrative conditions in Islamic and Crusader societies. It also included the correspondence that took place between the Ayyubid state and the Crusaders.
