The museum's large and diverse collection of Samanid pottery from ancient Samarkand (Afrasiab) includes many styles found only in the Trans-Oxiana region. One of the most distinctive features of this collection is represented by a deep semi-spherical bowl with a concave frame and ringed legs painted in red-brown and olive green with a black on white underlay. The combination of colors dates the bowl to the 10th century. The decoration is radial and the circular medallion in the center is filled with a grid of olive green and surrounded by a narrow band of zigzags. The walls are divided into six trapezoidal sections painted with alternating red-brown patterns depicting open hearts and sections. They are separated by six diagonal bands of decoration with black open hearts. Along the frame above the larger pieces there are narrow helmets with flowered patterns made in a special style and painted black. The bowl is in very good condition and creates a wonderful impression with the intense colors and bright sparkle of the high-quality glass.
