Notes
Some enamel ceramics (minae) have a particularly close relationship with pottery. Many examples are inscribed with verses and others are decorated with figures that refer to poetic themes and tales. Many of these colorful vessels, including this bowl, seem to depict the process of poetic narration itself: which takes place in assemblies (where courtiers and scholars gather for the purpose of reciting poems). It can be imagined that the performer here is the person seated to the left of the audience from the courtiers, singing the poetic lines inscribed along the outer edge of the bowl that begin by saying: “If the beloved abandons me, what can I do?” If you do not see the wisdom of our meeting, what can I do?
