Notes Before they were allowed to practice the profession, calligraphers were required to obtain a document proving their competence. The license included a few lines written by the candidate and evaluations of several teachers. This certificate consisted of three sections of paper with Arabic writing and was decorated with floral and floral designs drawn with gouache and camouflaged with gold. There is a line written in thuluth script at the top that says: “Speaking of blessings is gratitude for sincerity.” Below it there are two lines in Naskh script, which is a hadith text about the separate places designated for men and women in the mosque. The two texts were written by “Ali Rifaat,” whose verbiage is attested by Ismail al-Shukri, Uthman Nouri, and Hussein Haqqi, who are disciples of Muhammad Shihab al-Din, who here documents his right to practice planning. The teachers’ testimonies in Ruq’ah script are placed in three frames at the bottom of the page.
