Notes The shape of this shield is derived from Moorish models in North Africa. The name of this gear, which takes the shape of a kidney, also gives the name of an oval gear common in the West (tarch). The adargah is covered with colorful silk embroidery, which means that its owner is of high rank. The shield now in Vienna may have entered the Habsburg collections when Joanna I (1479-1555 AD) married Philip I (Philip the Handsome) (1478-1506 AD). In the late sixteenth century, the shield was in the collection of Archduke Ferdinand II (1529-95 9) in Ambras Castle near Innsbruck.
