Notes
An incomplete fragment of a Qur’an that consisted of twelve volumes. Each page contains a text of seven lines in cursive letters according to the Moroccan style, written in liquid silver on green paper. Voting and pronunciation markers (sukun and hamza) are indicated in gold, red, and blue. The titles of the surahs, accompanied by the number of verses, were written in golden ink. Each verse was separated from the other by a gilded rosette, consisting of seven corollas surrounded by a hemline, surmounted by eight groups of small gilded dots, grouped into groups each containing three dots. Each group of five verses is indicated by a simplified Kufic letter (ha), with a gilded teardrop shape that is emphasized in the margin by a more important element in the form of a drop of water decorated with tazwīq (a gilded drawing in relief on a red background). This manuscript is a distinguished example of a Qur’an written on paper, not parchment; It shows the new trends in writing that appeared at the end of the Marinid rule. All copies of the Qur’an before the end of the 8th century AH / 14th century AD) were written on parchment, which was considered a noble material worthy of carrying the Qur’anic texts. Paper, which had been manufactured in Morocco since the 9th century AH/15th century AD, remained an unnoble material and was only used for non-sacred writings. The use of paper prevailed only from the Marinid periods, when it began to be used to write down the Qur’an and the Prophet’s hadiths.
