Notes Like most of the most valuable carpets in the collection, this unparalleled Mamluk silk carpet was originally owned by the Austrian Imperial House and is not only the largest Mamluk carpet in the world but also the only work entirely of silk. It was undoubtedly intended to be spread in high-profile court settings and may have been woven in court workshops in Cairo even before the Ottoman conquest of the Mamluk Empire in 1517.
