Once attributed to the Gorgan Collection, this flat, rimmed dish rests on three legs in the shape of a crowned sphinx. The central field shows a drawing of an elephant holding a howdah with a figure obscuring its face, most likely a woman. This subject is not unusual, and indicates the intense political and cultural ties with South Asia at the time. It may be a reference to the story of Bahram Ghar and his Indian bride Sabnoud, from the Shahnameh.
