Notes A dinar minted for the Egyptian treasury, dated to the period of Al-Hakim’s caliphate bi-Amr Allah (386/411-996/1021), on both sides of a Kufic inscription distributed over four lines. On the first side we read the following phrase: “There is no god but God, alone, without partners, Muhammad is the Messenger of God, Ali is the guardian of God.” Around it we find an inscription that says: “It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it prevail over all other religions, even though the polytheists hate it.” (At-Tawbah: 33 and As-Saff: 9) On the other side, in the middle, we read the following phrase: “Abdullah, the governor of Al-Mansur, Abu Ali, the imam, the ruler, by the command of God, the Commander of the Faithful.” And on the letter, we read: “In the name of God, this dinar was minted in Egypt in the year three and four hundred (403).”
