Notes
Both the layout and gilding of this Qur’an are the work of Abu al-Hasan Ali (d. 1022 AD), who was better known as Ibn al-Bawab because he was the son of al-Hilal, who was a doorman. Ibn al-Bawab is known as the greatest Islamic calligrapher. This Qur’an is considered to be the original manuscript written by him that still exists. In this manuscript, each of the first two surahs begins with a decorated title. Also, the beginning of each surah is indicated only by a line in the golden thuluth script, which shows the title of the surah and the number of verses in it, and there is an element of a palm leaf in a special style that extends to the margin. The manuscript also includes five double pages of gilding.
