Below the frame is an inscription in Arabic in Nasta`liq script that conveys a sense of sacred protection and blessings for the “Fourteen Purified Ones” (Persian: Kaharda Masum) – the Prophet Muhammad, his daughter Fatima, and the Twelve Imams, sacred to Twelver Shiism. The presence of such epigraphic inscriptions on metalwork from western Iran dates back to the founding of the Safavid state (1501) and is directly linked to the widespread religious propaganda that eventually led to Shiism becoming the official religion of Iran.
