Notes These ceramic plates, bowls and vases are decorated with a band of Kufic calligraphy. In contrast to the characteristics of Islamic art, which avoids emptiness, we find emptiness (undecorated surfaces) in these works of art, and this is considered an artistic tradition that contradicts the characteristic of Islamic art’s decoration. Kufic calligraphy originated in Mecca and Medina (in 625 AD) as one of the oldest forms of Arabic calligraphy in Islam, where letters expand in geometric shapes to resemble each other.
