Notes The hallmark of the Islamic collection at the Khenenko Museum are the Ottoman carpets from the late 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. The carpet belongs to a traditional type of carpet or prayer rugs with a formation based on the stereotypical image of the mihrab, which is the place of prayer in the mosque that indicates the direction of the Qibla, where Muslims turn during prayer. The composition and images of the carpet, especially the central mihrab, colored in simple dark blue and crowned with an arch with a sharp gradient, as well as a special geometric carnation-shaped pattern at the top and bottom of the mihrab, indicate that the piece was made in the Giord or Kula workshops, two leading centers in Turkey for making carpets in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries AD. The many narrow decorative borders that fringe from the central arch add elegance and special beauty to the piece of art.
