Notes
This painting depicting a luxuriously dressed woman is traditionally associated with a painting representing a Persian nobleman. Unlike the Persian Noble painting from the same group, its ethnic origin has not yet been determined. The way the colors were applied in multiple layers as well as the clear symmetry between shadow and light clearly reveal that the painter was trained in Europe. This is also evidenced by the fact that the painter mixed the wet colors directly on the canvas and executed the highlights in thick leaden white. European influence is also evident in the sombre color palette and preference for shaded hues. It is a stark contrast to the Persian preference for pure, bright colours. This painting and the Persian Noble in the same collection are perhaps the extremely rare, if not the only, known examples of paintings by European artists in Persia. We know from sources that many painters from Europe, especially from the Netherlands, worked in the seventeenth century for the kings of Iran.
