Notes
The plan panels, copied in naqsha, thuluth and rq'a script, are arranged in identical pairs with identical gilding and mounted on double-page paper and exquisitely decorated with patterns inspired by Mughal enamel or pietra dura (pictorial mosaic with semi-precious stones). The album bears a note stating that the planning was drawn in the album of Janjir, the greatest expert of the Mughal emperors. It is very likely that they were put together for Aurangabad (r. 1658-1707), the first Mughal emperor with undisputed Islamic commitment who preferred drawing to drawing. This is a great display of the work of Indian writers who were active during his reign and gives an intimate impression of the elegance practiced at his court. Originally bound in album form in a hexagonal fold (concertina) format and with lacquer covers (glossy varnish), the album was re-bound in manuscript form in Europe at the beginning of the twentieth century.
