Notes Caliph Harun al-Rashid took the Raqqa area as his residence for more than twelve years, and a group of palaces were found in this area. This piece was found in Palace B, which is believed to belong to Caliph Al-Mu'tasim. The piece is a transparent, white, cylindrical glass cup decorated with five vertical fields of writing, from which the phrases “Drink and be merry” and “Work in Damascus” are read. The space between the fields of writing is filled with floral shapes. All of these decorations were executed with brown metallic luster paint. Through this piece and piece No. 12, in addition to another group of cups, we find out that this metallic luster paint was used on glass first before ceramics. From the phrase “worked in Damascus,” it is clear that this type of paint was known for its use in Damascus. It was made in Damascus and transported to the center of the Abbasid Caliphate in Raqqa.
